Council member opts out of pension

On the most surprising discovery last year when the IN was reviewing the City of Pensacola pension and retirement system was that the Pensacola City Council were included in the city’s retirement plan and the taxpayers were fitting the bill.

At the time, we were told by several council members that they had to do it and they had not choice because they were paid for their services.

Well, Council member Maren DeWeese pressed the issue and found out that she could opt out of the Florida Retirement System and the citizens will not paying for any retirement contributions for her.

Will the Mayor and the other council members follow her lead?
