Council to discuss Dollar General and Airport Food Services (Update)

chickfilaThe City of Pensacola released yesterday afternoon the agendas for next week’s meetings of the Pensacola City Council. Included on the agenda are two controversial items left over from 2013.

Mayor Ashton Hayward is requesting a public hearing on the rezoning of land on Spanish Trail from R-2 residential to C-1 commercial. If the council passes the change, then Dollar General is expected to build a store on the property – Dollar General In November, Hayward held a town hall meeting at the Vickery Center, which is close to the site. Residents in the audience walked away with the impression that Hayward opposed the rezoning. However, the mayor offers no recommendation in favor or against the rezoning. He simply asks for the hearing.

Update: The Dollar General being brought isn’t the one on Spanish Trail and Summit. After further review, I see the mayor has postponed that discussion to a future date. The Dollar General the mayor wants to the council wants to hold a public hearing on will be built on Ninth Ave.

The mayor is also bringing back the Airport Food Concessions contract – Airport Food. The last time the council had the contract on its agenda was Sept. 26, 2013, nearly four months ago. In October, City Administrator Colleen Castille told the council that she and city staff were gathering more information on the contract. Apparently that additional information is a letter from Airport Director Greg Donovan, dated Oct. 8 to then-Council President PC Wu Donovan letter.

Full, Full Disclosure: Collier Merrill, who is a co-owner of Great Southern Restaurant Group, which is a part of one of the groups that has made a bid for the airport food services contract, has a 5 percent interest in the Independent News. The Outzen women, love Chick-Fil-A, which is part of the other group bidding on the contract, but The Fish House did cater Cat and Tricia’s weddings. And Claney Outzen worked as a hostess at The Fish House last summer.
