The Florida State Fire Marshal has returned custody of the Escambia County Central Booking and Detention facility back to the control of the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office took over control of the property following an explosion within the building on Wednesday, April 30.
Investigators have found the facility structurally unsound.
“As as result, although the investigation remains ongoing, investigative personnel are no longer allowed to the enter the remaining structure, and therefore have no further need for the license to enter that was granted to this agency on May 3, 2014,” wrote Joe Steadman, Bureau Chief of the state Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations.
Steadman said that the fence is being erected around the building and the front entrances secured.
Attached to this news release is a letter from the State Fire Marshal’s Office regarding the transition and the status of the ongoing investigation.
