Daily editor says he knows best

Just months after he asked his readers to tell him what makes a good newspaper, PNJ executive editor Richard Schneider tells them they’re wrong.

The point of controversy is the daily’s Thursday, April 19 front-page whose above-the-fold area was filled with a large picture of the Va. Tech mass murderer and the headline “I did it – I had to.” The daily was inudated with phone calls, emails and letters protesting the cover.

In his column today, Schneider tells the reader that the picture is iconic and other papers did it, too. In others, you can tell us what you want in the paper, but we will do what we want. Besides it’s okay if other papers also do it….which is the same agrument my teenager uses.
Of course, there is no mention of how many papers were sold on April 19.

Today’s headline is “BLUES PILOT KILLED.”  Death sells daily newspapers.
