Daily Outtakes: DeSantis needs to come here, explain why change UWF

Florida believes that its citizens have a right to address its elected officials. Every city council and county commission has an open forum where the public can speak on issues and elected officials listen.

Gov. Ron DeSantis needs to come to Pensacola before the next University of West Florida Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 12. He needs to appear before the UWF students, faculty and alumni and explain why he wants to change the university.

UWF has excelled at the performance metrics established by the state Board of Governors. It set an enrollment record in the fall semester. The university is in the middle of a highly successful capital campaign.

Yet, the governor has orchestrated a weird Boise State professor, Scott Yenor, to be elected chairman of the Board of Trustees.

DeSantis has visited Pensacola often.

February 2024: At the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Pensacola Regional Operations Center, DeSantis announced 76 FHP personnel and 50 National Guardsmen would be deployed within the day to the U.S.-Mexico border.

April 2024: Gov. DeSantis held a press conference at Warrington Prep to discuss at Florida House that would streamline the process for converting failing schools to charter schools.

July 2024: Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Pensacola to highlight state investments in Northwest Florida’s aviation industry at a press conference at Pensacola State College.

October 2024: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke out against Amendment 3 at the press conference at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Gov. DeSantis needs to explain what UWF has done wrong to be hit with this drastic overhaul. Pensacola should be more than a political prop for his administration.
