Yesterday, I interviewed Dr. Angela Bush, the Birmingham middle school principal who took over Erwin Middle School and got the school off Alabama’s Comprehensive Support and Improvement list despite having to deal with the pandemic challenges. Watch this news report.

Since its inception, Erwin Middle School had been on the CSI list – which lists the bottom five percent of Title I schools in the state.
She became Erwin Middle’s principal in 2019 and served four years there until being promoted to a district position.
Here are some of the results from the last year of Angela’s tenure as the school’s principal:
• Increased academic achievement by 33% from Fall to Winter 21-22, leading to getting off the CSI list for the first time.Decreased the academic deficit by 24% of students performing below grade level.
• Decreased parental contacts for chronic absenteeism by 37% the last two years
• Decreased student discipline by 42.9% within two years.
• Decreased altercations by 83% from incorporating YK and AERIE Girls mentoring program which establishes leadership and conflict resolution skills.
• Increased teacher attendance by 5%
• Increased local school budget by 600% through community outreach and partnerships.
• Increased community support by 900% in three years
• Increased parental involvement in PTA from 0 to 20 over the past three years.
At the end of the four years, Erwin Middle School came off the CSI list for the first time and was ranked #5 of 15 middle schools in Jefferson County, Ala.
