The state Department of Education on Thursday published the first round of results from Florida’s new “progress monitoring” system of student assessments in public schools.

- The new tests, dubbed the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking or FAST exams, were implemented this school year. The Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis last year approved a measure that did away with the state’s previous standardized testing system.

The new system involves students taking tests three times each school year, with the final exams of the year used for state and federal accountability purposes.
Results: The results show that 50% of students in third through tenth grades scored “on-grade-level or above” on the final exams in English-language arts.
Escambia County – Final Results: 42%
By Grade:
Third 44% – improved over the year by 25 points
Fourth 57% – improved over the year: 28 points
Fifth 49% – improved over the year: 20 points
Sixth 37%- improved over the year: 4 points
Seventh 37% – improved over the year: 7 points
Eighth 38% – improved over the year: 11 points
Ninth 38% – improved over the year: 9 points
Tenth 40% – improved over the year: 6 points

Only slightly over a third of middle school students can read at their grade level or better.
By the 10th grade, it’s two out of five reading at grade level or better.

School District Job Fair
Meanwhile, the Escambia County School District needs teachers and more.
- The Escambia County Public Schools Human Resource Services Department will host a job fair from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, July 11, at the J.E.Hall Center, 30 E. Texar Drive.
Details: ECPS will be looking to fill vacancies in instructional, as well as in all educational support departments, including food service, custodial, maintenance, transportation, and teacher assistants.

Adopt a Rescue
Details: During this time, adoptions for all cats and dogs 1 year or older will be free. Puppies will be available for $50 and kittens will be available for $25. An $11 licensing fee will be applied to all adoptions for Escambia County residents.
