Daily Outtakes: Millionaire couple attempts to buy office

Had Bruce Childers submitted a completed Form 6 when he tried to qualify to run in the GOP primary for the Supervisor of Elections post, we would be talking about a millionaire couple investing $100,000 to win the race.

By making two $50,000 contributions to his campaign, Childers made the largest campaign loan of any person running for supervisor of elections in Escambia County history—possibly the biggest loan ever made by a candidate in any county race.

Meanwhile, Doug Underhill has organized a pro-Childers protest at 9 a.m. in downtown Pensacola, at the Ernie Lee Magaha Administration Complex.

This email was sent out yesterday:

Citizens will be protesting the voter disenfranchisement efforts of Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender Monday morning at 9 am in front of the Supervisor’s Office on Palafox, and we are asking you to please come down and hear the case they are making. The continued practice of closing primaries with fake write in candidates (“Ghost Candidates”) has reached a level never seen before, as all District 1 Democrats and NPAs were shut out of the election process by a 24 year old son of a Bergosh supporter who still lives with his parents.

You might find that hard to beat, but last week the appointed Supervisor of Elections disqualified his only opponent! After having previously qualified Bruce Childers, Interim Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender reversed his office’s decision, disqualifying Mr. Childers after the qualifying period had run out!

If you have to cheat to win, you are still a loser. We can’t agree on much in Escambia County, but all honorable people can agree that denying ANYONE their legal vote is always wrong. I pray that the media will attend and report on the citizen action on Monday.

Very Respectfully,
Doug Underhill

FYI: Write-in candidates have been a Republican tradition across the state, especially in Santa Rosa County where there are eight write-in candidates.
