Daily Outtakes: Milton finally gets wastewater permit

On Thursday afternoon, the City of Milton announced that it had received the DEP permit to build two spray fields on city-owned property on Jeff Ates Road. The fields will process 1.28 million gallons of treated effluent per day.

The City is currently awaiting review from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) before determining the project’s commencement date.

Why this matters: The North Santa Rosa Regional Water Reclamation Facility will enhance the region’s capacity for development, serving Milton, Berryhill, East Milton, and NAS Whiting Field and accommodating the potential growth of the Whiting Aviation Park and the I-10 corridor.

Dig Deeper: When the project is completed, Milton will no longer directly discharge treated effluent into the Blackwater River.

In the press release, city officials said, “With the existing facility approaching its 2 million gallons-per-day capacity and located close to the river, this project is critical for addressing environmental concerns and supporting the projected 32% increase in population by 2040.”

Talking Trash Cans

At his press conference yesterday, Mayor D.C. Reeves announced that residents will begin to notice QR stickers on their trash cans on Monday, April 1. When scanned, the codes provide access to the city website with information about city services.

“We’re trying to make it easy so if you have a question or a concern or you don’t know how to go find the number or the website or anything like that, your trashcan will speak to you. You’ll be able to go get those answers.”

The mayor expects the stickers applied to all the city’s garbage cans by June.
