Daily Outtakes: Opening Doors gives itself $$$

The Continuum of Care (CoC) is required to notify community partners and key stakeholders of the final version of the CoC Consolidated Application and CoC Priority Listing on its website.

The CoC – which is run by Opening Doors – gave Opening Doors nearly two-thirds ($456,511) of the monies approved by HUD ($701,502). The scoring committee is labeled “OD Scoring Committee” on its timeline.

  • I reviewed the application and the Opening Doors website, and I cannot find the names of the CoC board members, who served on the OD Scoring Committee and who voted on the entities receiving the funds.

And Opening Doors Executive Director John Johnson wonders why we question how his organization operates.

  1. Why is the The scoring committee not labeled “The Continuum of Care Scoring Committee” COC-SC?

Somehow this smacks of a COC (Continuum of Cash) for OD error that should been looked at long ago for a LEM (Learning Experience Moment) that may have brought a real continuum of care we would all point to as a success with quantifiable and justifiable metrics and not something that looks actionable by authorities who might oversee authorities.

Rick, can you reach out for comment from George Santos or Menendez on this grift looking issue?

  2. And once again, Rick, you are the only local print/radio media to do the job of getting this stuff out there. THANK YOU.

I would have wished it didn’t take those of us working to expose this situation three years to get er done. Sadly, that seems to be the timeline on this stuff. Just imagine if the people who can fix these things would bend an ear and lend a hand the first time advocates with good track records raise the issue. Or the second. Or even the twelfth.

And there were MANY people raising the alarm about this for a LONG time. That’s the problem with people avoiding Sunshine. It’s really hard to prove what they won’t write down and do in the dark, so they can get a lot of damage done if people are willing to take the easy route and look the other way.

The situation with the conflict of interest is way worse than even what you’ve relayed here, of course. Hopefully it will all get dragged into the light now sooner rather than later, so the people who know how to can clean up this mess and finally get a functional continuum up and running.

Timing on the REAP stuff starting to make sense? SMH.

Ethical advocates sounding the alarm about bad actors in the community doing their bad acts: 100.
People who accuse them every time of seeing monsters under the bed: 0
