Daily Outtakes: Teniadé Broughton faces tough re-election

MyDistrict 5 Pensacola Councilwoman Teniadé Broughton faces a more challenging re-election race than many thought.

  • In 2020, Broughton won her seat with 58.34% of the vote against Ron Helms. She raised $21,930.62.

She has raised only $2,950 for her re-election, while her opponent, Jenori Burroughs, has collected $6,295.

  • Broughton has also done very little door-to-door campaigning.

Conventional Wisdom: Elected officials are most vulnerable when they seek a second term. The first time, they didn’t have a political record. The second time, they do and have to prove that they fulfilled their promises to the voters.

  • Incumbents rarely have trouble raising money for their campaigns. Yet, Broughton has barely collected 10 percent of what she did four years ago.

What’s wrong? She has very little time to figure it out. The election is only 26 days away.
