Daily Outtakes: Who needs YouthFirst Century

CashTomorrow, the Escambia County Children’s Trust’s program committee will review its out-of-school grants and recommend which ones should be renewed. The renewals total $5.3 million, nearly half the Trust’s budget.

YouthFirst Century, run by Urban Development Center, has drawn much scrutiny for its request to expand its job development program for middle and high school students, YouthFirst Century, to include elementary children. Read more and more.

ECT reports that YouthFirst Century has served 30 youth. However, its invoices show their programs have averaged 18.5 middle and high school students weekly – far short of the 250 they proposed to receive a $400K grant.

The ECT program committee and its board must determine if this expensive program is necessary.

Northview High – from which UDC has failed to attract students – has some of Escambia County’s best career academies. They focus on AgriTech, building construction, culinary arts, and graphic arts.

Bratt Elementary – from which UDC hopes to draw more students – already has a robust after-school program run by the school district. It’s one of only five elementary schools with such programs.

Road to the White House

Florida’s Republican presidential primary will have eight names next March: North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former President Donald Trump.

The Republican Party of Florida must submit the names by Nov. 30 to state election officials. Candidates can withdraw their names from the primary ballot until Dec. 12.
