DCA says no, no, no to Perdido

The Florida Department of Community Affairs rejected the Escambia County Commission plan to raise the building caps on Perdido Key. Currently, a maximum 7,150 dwelling units — and 1,000 hotel or motel rooms are allowed on Perdido Key. The county’s proposal would have increased that amount to about 12,000 dwelling units and 2,500 lodging units.

The county commissioners of the 1980s screwed up on the original comprehensive land use plan for Perdido Key and has tried to change it for nearly ten years.

DCA has these problems with the county amendment:

  • Has not identified a funding source to pay for widening Perdido Key Drive.
  • Has not demonstrated there are adequate sewer capabilities for increased development.
  • Has not proven the Perdido Key beach mouse and nesting turtles will be protected.
  • These have been the same issues for years.
