Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order creating his version of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, its work will not be independent and will not examine the Governor’s office. Agencies will create similar teams to report how they waste money. The EO DOGE will focus on local governments and state universities and colleges.
The EO DOGE Team will be established within the Office of Policy and Budget in the Executive Office of the Governor (EO). It will be responsible for:
(1) ensuring compliance with this Executive Order;
(2) using publicly available information to identify and report unnecessary spending within county and municipal governments;
(3) coordinating with the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida and the State Board of Education to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending, programs, courses, staff, and any other inefficiencies within the State University System and the Florida College System; and
(4) recommending legislative reforms to promote efficiency, maximize productivity, and eliminate state and local government waste.
The EO DOGE Team will report any legislative recommendations to the Governor, the Chief Financial Officer, the Senate President, and the House Speaker no later than Sept. 30.
Each state agency will establish an Agency DOGE Team, which will:
(1) utilize advanced technology, such as artificial intelligence, as part of ongoing efforts to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending, programs, or contracts within the agency;
(2) identifying any pending or funded federal grant awards that are inconsistent with the policies of this State and should be returned to the American taxpayer in furtherance of the President’s DOGE efforts; and
(3) recommending administrative or legislative reforms to promote efficiency, maximize productivity, and eliminate waste in state and local government, including recommendations to leverage modern technology to eliminate duplication of services, reduce fees, and cut overhead.
Each Agency DOGE Team shall report its progress on the foregoing responsibilities to the EO DOGE Team monthly until this Executive Order expires.
The Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida and the State Board of Education will collaborate with the EO DOGE Team to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending, programs, courses, staff, and any other inefficiencies within the State University System and the Florida College System.
DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE
In a press conference today, Ron DeSantis announced the formation of a Florida-level version of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In response, the Florida Democratic Party has released the following statement.
- “Ron DeSantis needs to shut his damn mouth,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “Republicans have been in total control of Florida’s government for nearly 30 years, and he wants to talk about government waste?”
“Ron has consistently passed the largest state budgets in Florida’s history, illegally spent millions of taxpayer dollars to run political campaigns to take down Amendments 3 and 4 and just allocated $250 million to fund his political stunt on immigration. Don’t lecture us on wasting taxpayer dollars.
“We all know this isn’t about reigning in spending — it’s about Trump endorsing Byron Donalds instead of Casey DeSantis. Maybe Ron should have considered the political consequences before he decided to run against the leader of his party for president.”
(4) recommending legislative reforms to promote efficiency, maximize productivity, and eliminate state and local government waste.
Start with the ECUA Board. They make $40,000 plus a year with full health benefits and a state retirement plan.
They are about 4 meetings a month. The meetings are at 3:00 in the afternoon- rarely can any working folks are unable to attend.
Compare that pay nd benefits with the city council.
Just saying… make the ECUA Board full time and have district offices, or at least district meetings weekly.
