DeSantis’ military background appeals to Northwest Florida

Last week, I had Congressman Ron DeSantis on “Pensacola Speaks.” The Republican is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated next year by presidential hopeful Marco Rubio.

DeSantis talked about his military background.

“I was stationed at Naval Station Mayport (as JAG officer). I also did duty down at the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Then I got assigned to Navy Seal Team I, deployed as part of the commander’s staff, overtook Fallujah in 2007 during the troop serge.

“When we were there, that was the Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Then we did the surge to drive them out. I was there to see that area be transformed. Of course, that’s the area now ISIS has taken over. It’s pretty sad to see.

“I also remember when I was Iraq, even though we were in the Suni area, I remember the number 1 source of death for our service members was from Iranian-made bombs and these Iranian-backed terror groups. When you’re dealing with this Iran agreement now in Congress, I see that through the prism of somebody who saw how they killed hundreds and hundreds of our service members. That’s not something I’m going to forget.”
