DeSantis plays politics with assassination attempt

At his daily traveling press conference, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-197 directing Florida’s law enforcement agencies—the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP)—to investigate the assassination attempt against Donald Trump. Executive Order 24-197 can be read here.

  • Wanting to jump on DeSantis’ coattails, Attorney General Ashley Moody directed her statewide prosecutors to assist FDLE and FHP. She said, “We will not wait on the federal government to act. Florida is launching its own investigation.”

DeSantis appointees Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner and FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass sang the chorus.

  • Kerner: “We accept this mission with humility and know that with our law enforcement partners, Florida will get to the bottom of this. We will be transparent with the public and hold the suspect accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
  • Glass: “This act of domestic terrorism is unacceptable, and under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody, it will not stand.”

We need less political theater and more work on reducing property insurance, improving housing affordability and expanding health care coverage. However, those issues are not as easy as spending Florida tax dollars on something the FBI and Secret Service are handling.

Let’s hope the state agencies don’t interfere with the investigation and hurt the prosecution of the crimes committed.
