The Downtown Improvement Board decided this morning to not sponsor Pelican Drop, the city’s annual New Year Eve’s event, this year. According to DIB chairman John Peacock, the event was not self-sufficient, and many downtown restaurant and bar owners said that their businesses would do well without it.
The DIB also decided to sunset the monthly Gallery Nights in September. The DIB’s special events committee will look at developing another event that may occur quarterly.
“Downtown Pensacola is vibrant and has changed considerably over the past few years,” Peacock told Inweekly. “There was a time when the Gallery Nights were critical to bringing people downtown, but the feedback that we’ve received is the monthly street parties have run their course.”
