DOJ: ECSO is 20 years behind

At the Lake Charlene Homeowners Association meeting, Sheriff David Morgan said a Department of Justice investigator told him that the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is 20 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to police procedures and policies.

DOJ has wrapped up the jail review phase of its investigation and is now looking at the ECSO operations. The DOJ investigation is based on complaints concerning jail deaths, taser abuses and other allegations of abuse by deputies under the McNesby administration.

No reports have been issued by the DOJ. However, the ECSO did recently suspend K-9 operations until the handlers received additional training.
