Donson arrested after being kept from attorney and family for four days

The daily newspaper reports today that Robert Donson has been arrested on charges associated with his shooting at Tom Ann Buddy’s Liquor Store last Friday. The man, who is in Baptist Hospital, is charged with felony counts of assault, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon.

The arrest warrant was issued four days after he was shot by Police Officer Shawn Thompson. During those four days, Donson was kept from his family and attorney. Only the police were allowed to see him. Yesterday, Donson’s attorney and sister were made to wait two and half hours at Baptist Hospital before they were finally allowed to see Donson. Within an two hours of their visit with him, an arrest warrant was issued for him.

Guilty or not guilty? I don’t know, but Donson and his family deserved better treatment.

A criminal defense lawyer shared this troubling observation yesterday:

“There are law enforcement officers in this community who know how to violate someone’s rights up to the point that any monetary remedy is too little for an attorney to take their case.”

Donson and his family got treated this way, because PPD knew they could get away with it. A thug wannabe, poor black family—who cares? Apparently no lessons were learned from the Victor Steen incident.
