Escambia County Sheriff’s Office appears to be top heavy when you compare it to the operations at the Pensacola Police Department. City of Pensacola has 112 police officers with salaries ranging from $32,491 to $58,479. The Sheriff (excluding detention and court security) has 154 deputies ($32,895-$36,327), 27 deputies/first class ($36,326-$45,345), 29 senior deputies ($43,357-$52,782) and 33 master deputies ($52,153-$69,672).
So in all, the ECSO has 243 deputies with salaries ranging from $32,895-$69,672.
To manage its 112 police officers, Pensacola PD has 25 Sergeants ($55,525-$66,734), 10 Lieutenants ($66,534-$70,902), an assistant chief ($85,545) and a chief ($110,796).
To manage its 243 deputies (33 are master deputies who make as much as PPD sergeants and lieutenants), the Sheriff has 52 sergeants ($42,876-$68,745), 34 Lieutenants ($52,071-$83,331), 8 captains ($78,000-$88,876), a major ($97,654), chief deputy ($127,515) and sheriff ($128,652).
I’m not including the PPD’s four administrative captains ($74,818-$72,415), but on the ECSO side, I’m not including the CFO ($108,033), Planning Director ($95,933), IT Dtr ($85,636), Fleet mgr ($82,666), Admin Dtr ($75,000), Risk Mgr ($75,000) and Homeland Security ($75,000).
Total PPD sergeants, lieutenants, asst. chief and chief: $2,425,161
Total ECSO sergeants, lieutenants, captains, major, chief deputy, sheriff: $6,184,896
If we include the master deputies, the ECSO total increases to $8,115,594
So for a deputy force that is roughly twice the size of the Pensacola Police force (depending on how we classify the master deputies), the Escambia County Sheriff Office is spending 335% more to supervise and manage its deputies than PPD does to manage and supervise its police officers.
If it had less management layers, the ECSO could increase pay without increasing its budget.
