North Santa Rosa County residents will need to make preparations for a change in solid waste collection services on Jan. 2, when Emerald Coast Utilities Authority will be expanding its services north of Yellow River.
ECUA will begin delivering new garbage and recycling containers to north Santa Rosa County customers this week in preparation for the expansion, and residents who will be opting for the new curbside services should contact ECUA by Dec. 26 to avoid service interruption.
New ECUA containers should not be used until after customers’ last scheduled pickup date with their outgoing provider, either Dec. 29, 30 or 31, and old containers should be left empty at the curbside for pickup by the previous provider.
The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners approved entering into an interlocal agreement with ECUA for the services during the Nov. 18 commission reorganizing meeting.
The new ECUA services are $51.21 per quarter and include twice weekly garbage pickup, weekly recycling pickup per resident request at time of signup, biweekly yard debris pickup and bulky waste pickup per resident request.Services are not mandatory, but residents who do not sign up will be responsible for transporting waste to the Central Landfill in Milton or the Jay Residential Drop Off Station in Jay.
Residents may also choose a small provider that is permitted and utilizes trucks that weigh 15,000 pounds or less.
Residents in the limits of the city of Milton, town of Jay or Naval Air Station Whiting Field will have no change in solid waste providers.
