Election Day ground game won Escambia commission spots

Steve Stroberger won the GOP Commission primary for the District 1 county commission seat, defeating two-term incumbent Jeff Bergosh by 1,533 votes, 4,793 to 3,260. Perennial also-ran Jesse Casey came in a distant third with 795 votes.

Bergosh received the most votes by mail, 1,044, which gave him a 232-vote lead over the challenger. However, Stroberger took the lead in the Early Voting period with 1,686, which moved him ahead of Bergosh by 423 votes. On election day, Stroberger crushed the incumbent by an almost 2-to-1 margin.

In the District 4 commission race, Ashlee Hofberger won the GOP primary, 418 votes more than second-place Walker Wilson and 670 more than Buck Mitchell.

Wilson had a narrow 23-vote lead over Hofberger in the votes by mail but saw it disappear in the Early Voting period when Hofberger (865 votes) and Mitchell (697 votes) received more than his 689 votes. He went into election day trailing by only 153 votes. Hofberger had a better ground game, received 1,455 votes to his 1,190, and walked away with the victory. She will face Democrat Ron Helms in November.
