Escambia County may raise gas tax to fund ECAT

Escambia County commissioners voted to raise local option gas tax 5 cents per gallon to fund Escambia County Transit Authority which will lose its City of Pensacola funding this Spring. It will generate an estimated $7 million per year.

Commissioners agreed to lower property taxes in 2007-08 to offset the new tax’s impact on the citizens.

The public hearings are scheduled in April. It will take 4 votes to implement. It would go in to effect – Jan. 1, 2008.
