Escambia County third reading performance rises above state average for first time

Congratulations to the parents, teachers and volunteers who worked hard to improve reading performance in our area.

The Florida Department of Education has released the third grade reading scores for 2016-17 school year. Escambia County School District has improved the 3rd Grade English Language Arts (ELA) scores to exceed the state average – 59% vs. 58%.

The county’s increase, eight percentage points, is in the top 20 for reading improvement. Escambia County tied with Bay and Volusia counties for #34, out of the state’s 67 school districts. Santa Rosa County’s third graders finished third.

In press release about the scores, Achieve Escambia said, “For the past three years, ECSD has made positive gains toward ensuring that every student achieves academic success.We are proud of the diligent and committed work by our educators, administrators, parents, and students. Congratulations on this important achievement!”

Of Escambia County’s 31 public elementary schools, 13 finished about the state average – 42% of the schools.
