Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May, a Democrat, was approached last week by Charles Thornton, the vice chairman of the Escambia County Florida Republican Executive Committee.

“It’s so unfortunate how divisive local politics have become,” May said. “I pride myself on being someone that, although I’m a Democrat, that I work with Democrats, Republicans, independents, no party affiliates for whatever is best for this community.”

He discussed how he was warned by Thornton that the Republican Executive Committee was unhappy with him.

“One of the members of the executive committee of the Republican Party talked about their meeting on Monday and the concern of what things that I should be doing. And if (I was) not doing (them), there was going to be a candidate that they were going to support that came out of Republican Party, Mr. Johnson.”

He continued, “I’ve told Mr. Thornton that this – to have partisanship politics is very divisive for this community. And we stand on representing everyone.”
