Experienced Wildlife Observers Needed

From Emerald Coastkeepers:

Audubon is pre-screening wildlife observers for oil spill cleanup activities. This is important work. Cleanup activities pose significant threats to wildlife and habitats.

Official beach cleanup crews responding to the oil spill will now be required to have a wildlife observer accompanying them during night work in the Panhandle, out of concern for impacts to beach wildlife like marine turtles, shorebirds and beach mice.

Observers will be given hazardous material training as well as training in a monitoring protocol, but will be required to have some background in biology and conservation, either through practical field experience in an academic or professional capacity, or through coastal field
volunteer experiences such as Bird Stewards or Marine Turtle Patrol participants. Interested qualified individuals are being recruited for activities on sandy beaches from Escambia to Taylor counties. This will be ongoing, paid work.

Dear Volunteers, (from United Way and BRACE (Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies)

You are invited to attend an orientation and overview at the Pensacola Beach Hilton on Monday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Tuesday July 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers are need to inform citizens at beach locations of safety recommendations when encountering oil on beach, oil clean-up crews on beach or answer any other questions referring to the incident (non-technical), plus help tourists or beachgoers clean their shoes, feet or hands if in contact with oil. Please email cleanbeachstations@gmail.com if you are interested in attending the orientation or have any questions.

We are also having a training session on Friday, July 9th at 5pm at the Vickery Center, where we will train people how to set up and run a volunteer reception center. We are hoping to have some local agencies there as well, if you are interested in other volunteer opportunities.
