Factoid: Jacksonville City Council

The Jacksonville council has 19 members. The city is divided into 14 districts of nearly equal population and each of these districts elects a single council member. The other five council members represent the entire community “at large.” The single member districts serve an average of 50,000 people each.

Pensacola City Council has 9 members, plus the mayor. The city is divided into 7 districts. Two seats and the mayor are elected “at large.” The entire city has a population of 55,311.

So each Jacksonville council member that is elected to a single district seat serves a population almost equal to Pensacola’s entire population.
