Faculty censured New College board

The vast majority of faculty at New College of Florida voted in favor of 13 complaints against the college’s Board of Trustees

About 80% of the faculty believe the board is “disregarding their fiduciary duties,” according to a letter sent to college leaders Monday and reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

Why this matters:  In January,  DeSantis reshaped the New College Board of Trustees by appointing six new members, who promptly fired the college president and hired DeSantis’ former commissioner of education, Richard Corcoran.

The goal has been to make the college a southern version of Hillsdale College, a small, Christian college in Michigan.

Tampa Times reports the professor behind the censure said she did not seek a vote of no confidence, because hope remains the board can correct its actions. Read more.

Reaction:  The college dismissed the complaints as a common reaction of  “resistance to change.”
