FCAT reading scores show Escambia elementary schools the same, middle slightly up and high school down over 2013

School Desk
The Florida Department of Education has posted the 2014 FCAT scores. Escambia County still remains below the state averages in reading for all grades.

Elementary schools – third, fourth and fifth- had the same percentage of students score a 3 or higher, which is considered passing and proficient for their grade levels. Forty-five percent all third and fifth graders were not reading on their grade levels; 44 percent of fourth graders were below a passing score.

Middle school students – sixth, seventh and eighth – showed improvements ranging from 1-2 percentage points. All were below state averages, but the sixth and seventh grades closed the gap by 2-3 points. Forty-seven percent of sixth graders, 48 percent of seventh graders and 49 percent of eighth graders failed to pass the reading test.

In high school, the ninth graders scored two points less than 2013 and tenth graders scored three points better. Both grades were below state averages. Fifty-five percent of the ninth graders and 48 percent of the tenth graders failed to pass the test. Juniors and Seniors don’t take the reading test.
