FCAT scores don’t translate to ACT success

ACT scores released on Wednesday showed that Florida’s average went from 19.5 in 2010 to 19.6 in 2011. However, the state still lags behind the nation which has an average score of 21.1. Florida’s was tied with Kentucky for the 48th best score in the nation among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Only Tennessee and Mississippi had lower scores.

Percentage hitting the benchmarks by subject:

English: 55
Reading: 44
Math: 36
Science: 20

Only Mississippi was lower in science (13 percent), and Mississippi had 100 percent of its graduates take the test. Florida only had about two-thirds of its graduates do so.

The mean composite score nationally was 21.1. The State of Florida was 19.6.

Escambia had a mean composite score of 20.5. Here are the high school scores:
