FDOT, City tout Cervantes crosswalks

Seven new mid-block crossing locations are a major feature of the pedestrian safety improvements under construction on West Cervantes Street, between Dominguez and A Street in Pensacola.

The mid-block crossings have multiple layers of crosswalk visibility such as:

The rapid flashing beacons are an improvement over the traditional crosswalk warning lights because they use high-intensity LEDs. These lights are exceptionally noticeable for drivers both during the day and at night. Their amber color and quick flash pattern help make them visible in headlight glare, on wet roads, or in other situations that reduced visibility.

Studies have shown that RRFBs can improve driver yield rates by 96% and reduce crashes by 47%.

The new mid-block crossings are part of the $7 million effort to improve pedestrian safety along West Cervantes Street. The work is estimated for completion in mid-2022.

FDOT is making every effort to ensure pedestrian safety along the Cervantes Street corridor. Be looking for more safety tips as the project nears completion.
