Feeding the Gulf Coast Expands Food Access Amid Federal Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown continues, thousands of federal employees and contractors across South Alabama, South Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle have now gone without full pay. The impacts of this disruption are being felt across the community as lost income affects local businesses, childcare, and essential household expenses. Feeding the Gulf Coast is responding to the growing demand for food assistance and supporting those facing financial strain and uncertainty.

Federal employees and contractors are experiencing interrupted wages, leaving many to make difficult choices between paying bills and putting food on the table. In response, Feeding the Gulf Coast is coordinating supplemental food distributions and establishing additional food access points across its 24-county service area. The organization is working with federal civilian offices, local military base personnel, and community partners to identify emerging needs and connect households with essential resources and support. These efforts are being carried out at a scale necessary to reach those most affected and ensure families continue to have access to nutritious food during this period of uncertainty.

With more than 34,000 federal civilian employees in the region potentially affected by furlough or loss of income, the need for food assistance continues to grow.

“Shutdowns create instability for hardworking families already stretched thin,” said Michael Ledger, President and CEO of Feeding the Gulf Coast. “We’re grateful for the federal employees who call the Gulf Coast home, and we’re committed to ensuring no one faces hunger during this time of uncertainty. Federal civilian employees and active-duty military personnel invest in our communities, and we are striving to minimize the hardship they now face.”
