Fire vortex in Gulf

A fire vortex erupts inside of a controlled burn (left side) during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response, June 9, 2010. A fire vortex is formed when rapidly rising hot air pulls cooler oxygen-rich air in from the bottom, increasing the temperature of the fire and creating the twisting shape.
