Firsthand account: White House Correspondents’ Dinner

ABC News’ Karen Travers sat at the head table, next to the First Lady, because she is on the board of the White House Correspondents’ Association.

“This is sort of our Super Bowl weekend in Washington,” she said. “Every year we’ve got so many things going on, but really the dinner is meant to be a big, big fundraiser for our scholarships. We give out dozens of scholarships each year to college students who want to work in Washington and who want to be political reporters. We honor them at the dinner, at the video presentation, and they all get to attend and spend some time in DC meeting with reporters and Washington officials as well.”

On Colin Jost:

“It’s always a tough routine to do. It’s one thing when you’re writing that joke and you’re delivering it on SNL on the set in New York, 500 miles away from the White House, and maybe the president might see it on the clip. It is another thing to deliver that same joke when he is literally sitting three feet away from you and his wife is 10 feet away from you. And the First Lady took it all in great humor too, but there was some where you could tell she was like, she didn’t like that one very much.”
