Flight Adventure Deck Marks 30 Years of Connecting Pensacola Students to STEM
Since 1996, the National Naval Aviation Museum’s signature middle school program has put more than 125,000 students in the cockpit of real-world science and engineering.
Three decades after its founding, the Flight Adventure Deck is still doing what it set out to do—spark something in a 12-year-old standing inside one of the world’s premier aviation museums that a textbook never quite could.
The Naval Aviation Museum Foundation (NAMF) this week celebrated the program’s 30th anniversary, marking a milestone that has quietly shaped STEM education across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties since 1996.
By the Numbers
- 125,000+ students served since the program launched
- Up to 5,000 students participate each year
- Nearly 1,000 teachers supported through professional development
- Summer programming added in 2009
- Curriculum spans aviation, space, engineering, and advanced science
A Three-Way Partnership
The Flight Adventure Deck runs through a collaborative structure linking NAMF with the Escambia County School District and the Santa Rosa County School District. Designed for 6th through 8th graders, it blends classroom instruction with hands-on simulation experiences at the National Naval Aviation Museum on Naval Air Station Pensacola.
“For 30 years, we’ve been proud to partner with Santa Rosa and Escambia County school districts to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience that connects classroom learning to real-world application. We’re not just celebrating 30 years, we’re building the next 30.”
— Kyle Cozad, President and CEO, NAMF
What’s Next
As it enters its fourth decade, NAMF says it is focused on expanding access and enhancing programming. The foundation has not detailed specific changes, but the emphasis is on keeping the curriculum current with the demands of careers in STEM fields—an area of growing importance to Northwest Florida’s defense and aerospace economy.
About the Flight Adventure Deck: The program is located at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola—the world’s largest naval aviation museum and one of Florida’s most visited. Admission to the museum is always free.
