This morning, the bipartisan Florida Legislative Jewish Caucus called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to reconsider the appointment of Scott Yenor to the University of West Florida Board of Trustees because of “his stunning antisemitic commentary.”

Sen. Randy Fine posted on X: “Antisemites have no place in Florida’s universities, let alone as its leaders.”

The caucus’ press release stated:

“The Florida Jewish Legislative Caucus wishes to express our deep concern over the appointment and potential confirmation of Scott Yenor as chairman to the University of West Florida’s board of Trustees. His history of antisemitic and misogynist rhetoric is not only deeply offensive, but also incompatible with the principles of leadership and integrity that should define Florida’s higher education.

Among other offensive public statements recently on his personal X account, Yenor implied that only non-Jewish white men are viable political leaders.

Florida’s University should be centers of academic excellence, preparing students to contribute to our state’s economic strength and national security. Allowing individuals with a track record of divisive and prejudice remarks to hold positions of influence within our institutions undermines that mission and erodes public trust.

The Jewish community has long been a cornerstone of Florida’s business, legal, and civic leadership. At a time when antisemitism is rising nationwide, our state must take a firm stance against those who seek to marginalize or disparage any community. Ensuring that our universities are free from this line of this kind of rhetoric is not about political ideology, it’s about upholding the fundamental values of respect, responsibility, and merit-based leadership.

We demand Governor DeSantis reconsider this appointment and work to ensure that Florida’s universities reflect the principles of fairness, strong moral character, and commitment to the success of all students.”
