The Escambia County Sheriff Foundation has received a significant boost in its mission to empower local youth, thanks to a substantial grant from the Florida Blue Foundation. This funding will directly support the Sheriff’s Blazer Academy, an award-winning mentorship program targeting teenagers throughout Escambia County.

Why this matters: The funding will enable the foundation to expand its reach and deepen its commitment to Sheriff Simmons’ vision of creating meaningful mentorship opportunities for local youth.

What Grant Covers

The Florida Blue Foundation grant will fund two complete classes of 25 students each. Participants receive meals, formal attire including their signature blazer, educational materials, and a memorable graduation ceremony celebrating their achievements.

“We are deeply grateful to the Florida Blue Foundation for recognizing the profound impact that structured mentorship programs can have on our community’s youth,” said Whitney Lucas, President of the Escambia County Sheriff Foundation.

Building Trust Through Mentorship

Sheriff Chip Simmons emphasizes the program’s core mission: “The Blazer Academy was created to build trust, foster wellbeing, and positive interactions between our youth and law enforcement. We believe strongly in the power of community partnerships, and this generous support from the Florida Blue Foundation significantly advances our mission of preparing young people to become confident and responsible leaders.”

Hong Potomski, Northwest Market Leader for Florida Blue, highlighted the connection between youth mentorship and community health: “At Florida Blue, we believe that investing in programs like the Sheriff’s Blazer Academy aligns with our mission to help people and communities achieve better health. By supporting initiatives that foster mentorship and positive youth development, we are addressing key drivers of health such as mental well-being and community engagement, ultimately contributing to healthier, more resilient communities.”
