Just received word that Rod Kendig passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 72.
He had served as both the Pensacola city manager (1985-94) and as Escambia County Administrator (1978-84). While he was city manager, Pensacola built the City Hall on Main Street and the main terminal at the Pensacola Regional Airport.
Autism Pensacola honored Rod with its Autism Spirit award in 2009 for his life-long service to those with disabilities. Troy Moon wrote a beautiful article about Rod and his wife Paula’s dedication to their daughter Chesley (News Journal, “A family’s love, a child’s determination,” Aug. 6, 2006).
Depending how you want to count George Touart’s tenure as county administrator, Kendig either held the county administrator position longer than anyone else or had the second longest tenure. He, at least, held the record for the most consecutive months.
