Gulf Islands National Seashore crews were able to complete assessments this morning which revealed that J. Earl Bowden Road, Highway 399 sustained significant damage making both road unsafe for traffic. Fort Pickens road has several feet of sand and some damage to the bike lanes making the road impassible. Both roads will remain closed until further assessments and repairs can be completed.
The seashore will reopen Perdido Key area today at 1:00 pm. Roads have been cleared and Rosamond Johnson Beach area will resume normal operations. Work continues at the Okaloosa area and the seashore will reopen this area at tomorrow at 8:00 am. Naval Live Oaks day use areas and the exhibit area at Park Headquarters remain closed today as park staff remove debris from the storm and make necessary repairs.
The visitor center at Fort Barrancas is open Thursday through Monday from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. Fort Barrancas and Advanced Redoubt have resumed normal operations.
All Mississippi areas, including West Ship Island and Davis Bayou areas in Mississippi are now open following Hurricane Michael.
