The Florida Senate opened the 2015 legislative session with unanimous passage of bi-partisan legislation to better protect greyhounds by requiring more accountability from the greyhound racing industry. Senate Bill 2, named in honor of Vicky Gaetz – a tireless advocate for dogs and other animals – is sponsored by Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood).
“Racing greyhounds are prone to injuries, which can to often lead to horrible pain and premature death,†said Senator Sobel. “Injury reporting is a simple step that will lead to fewer deaths and a better quality of life for these precious animals.â€
“Of the seven states that have live greyhound racing, only Florida and Alabama do not require the reporting of racing greyhound injuries,†said Senate President Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando). “Amid the difference of opinions on a wide variety of issues related to gaming in our state, injury reporting seems to be an area of consensus, so I am hopeful this is the year we will see this good bill become law.â€
The “Victoria Q. Gaetz Racing Greyhound Protection Act†requires all injuries to racing greyhounds that occur in Florida be reported to the Division of Pari-mutuel Wagering in the Department of Business and Professional Regulation within seven days after the date the injury occurred or is believed to have occurred.
“Vicky Gaetz has been a passionate voice for animals and is particularly committed to protecting those that have been injured, abused, or neglected,†continued Senator Sobel. “I am grateful for her ongoing support and pleased to see this legislation bear her name.â€
The legislation next moves to the Florida House.
