GOP delegate says Trump has fire in belly that Romney, McCain lacked [podcast]

Martin Simmons, chairman of the Republican Party of the First Congressional District, was one of two delegates from our area to the Republican National Convention. Rep. Jeff Miller was the other.

Simmons believes that Trump wants the presidency more than Sen. John McCain in 2008 or Gov. Mitt Romney in 2012.

“John McCain and Mitt Romney both, they were afraid to win and I’m not sure it’s just because they would be winning against the first black president, which I can understand somebody thinking that,” said Simmons on “Pensacola Speaks.” “But, I think they just did not have the fire and the belly to win. Well, Trump certainly not only has the fire in the belly, he is not afraid to win one iota against Hillary Clinton.”

He doesn’t believe that Hillary Clinton being the first female nominated for the presidency by a national party will be a factor in November.

“Hillary’s not going to be, even she wins, she won’t be the first woman president because she’ll be Hillary Clinton,” he said. “The fact she’s Hillary Clinton so far eclipses the fact that she would be the first woman president that the first woman president issue is a non-issue because she’s Hillary Clinton. If it was anybody else, they’d be the first woman. No. We got Hillary here. Forget that first woman thing. It’s Hillary Clinton.”

Like most delegates in Cleveland, Simmons was impressed by the Trump children.

“You’ve heard blue collar billionaire, well when his kids get up there and they say they learned how to drive a caterpillar dump truck or caterpillar bull dozer before they could drive a car and they actually are out there on the job site,” he said. “He’s got his grown children are amazing.”
