Greener, Leaner Escambia

After a year-long effort to reduce its energy consumption, Escambia County has earned its star—its Energy Star.

The Escambia County Central Office Complex has been awarded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star certification. The facility is now listed on the agency’s Energy Star registry as a top-performing building.

In order to attain the EPA’s energy certification a building must use 35 percent less energy and generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar buildings across the U.S. Escambia County officials worked for a year on the county facility before applying for the nationally recognized award.

According to a statement released by Escambia County, the central office complex scored a rating of 84 out of a possible 100 points. Facilities must score a minimum of 75  points to qualify for the certification.

In addition to the EPA’s Energy Star rating, the county complex also has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Escambia County received that certification in April 2011.
