Harriet Riley: A familiar voice in Houston [podcast]

On “Pensacola Speaks,” I spoke with former Pensacola resident, and fellow Ole Miss alum, Harriet Riley about her experiences with Hurricane Harvey. Harriet served as the director of United Ministries here during hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina. She lives in Houston.

“I’ve been through a lot of hurricanes growing up in Mississippi and then living in Pensacola for so long,” she shared. “Harvey was a different beast because it made landfall on a Friday night in Corpus Christi, but it didn’t really start affecting us until the next night…We had just epic amounts of rain.”

Harriet said that some homes have been flooded three times – first by the storm, then twice by waters released from area dams.Texas Department of Public Safety has reported more than 185,000 homes were damaged and 9,000 destroyed throughout the state.

She recommended that we contribute to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to help victims of the storm.
