The News Service of Florida reports that former state Rep. Mike Hill, R-Pensacola, has opened a campaign account to try to return to the House in 2018, according to information posted Thursday on the Florida Division of Elections website.
Hill was first elected to the Florida House in 2013 in a special election after Rep. Clay Ford suddenly passed away. In 2016, he ran unsuccessfully for the Florida Senate against Doug Broxson. His campaign was dealt a blow with it was discovered that his family lived outside of District 2 in Marcus Point subdivision. Hill had claimed on his paperwork with Florida House that he lived at Portofino on Pensacola Beach.
Hill is now running for House District 1, which includes the Marcus Point residence. Rep. Clay Ingram cannot seek re-election next year in the district because of term limits.
Republican Rebekah Bydlak and Democrat Vikki Garrett also have opened accounts to run for the Ingram seat.

If you believe state law, a person can only have one permanent legal residence at a time. For years, Walter Byran Hill (who oddly calls himself “Mike” that I guess is better than calling himself “Flash” or “Bubba”) claimed to have two legal residences at the same time. One was his Marcus Pointe home in District 1; the other was an address where he claimed to live at the very same time in District 2. Hill claimed a Homestead Exemption on his home in District 1 and registered to vote in Pensacola Beach, Escambia County District 4 and state District 2 elections using his swanky Portofino Island Resort address. Never reported in the media as far as I know is if Hill was allowed to profit from his 2014-2016 Homestead Exemptions in District 1, during the years he claimed to live in District 2, or if he is going to be prosecuted for voter fraud for having voted in District 2, while at the same time claiming as a matter of state law to simultaneously live in District 1. Let’s hope that Clay Ingram does the right thing and endorses anyone “but” Mike Hill.
