Hot City, Cool City Walking Tour, July 19

walk
Join 350 Pensacola for a midsummer stroll through downtown Pensacola. Participants will explore old and new ways that cities can adapt to the higher temperatures and heavier rainfall of our changing climate. Along the way, the group will look at the many features of buildings, streets, and parks that can help keep cities and their inhabitants cooler and more comfortable while using less energy.

350 Pensacola’s Christian Wagley will guide the walking tour. Wagley is a downtown resident who spends much of his time studying the traditional ways that communities were designed and built in harmony with local climate. The group will focus on where it’s hot and where it’s not, compare temperatures in different areas of the City, and see firsthand how the design of cities shapes our energy use and comfort. And in honor of one of the most traditional ways of cooling off, the group will stop to chill down with a free cold beverage.

Forecasts from the National Climate Assessment predict longer and hotter summers and more rainfall in the southern U.S. Pensacola and other cities will need to adapt to the changing conditions in order to protect their economies, public health, and quality of life.

The walking tour will begin at Martin Luther King Plaza, located in the center of Palafox Street, one and a half blocks north of Garden Street. The tour will conclude at 5:30 p.m., leaving plenty of time to grab a bite to eat before the weekly showing in the Saenger Summer Movie Series at 7 p.m.
