The Tallahassee City Commission voted yesterday to lease the city’s 3.8 acres on West Pensacola Street for a new 24-hour Comprehensive Emergency Services Center that will focus on serving the homeless in its city.

The land has an appraised value of $610,000. The 50-year lease calls for an annual $10 per year fee and options to purchase during the lifetime of the lease.

According to an article in the Tallahassee Democrat, the city and United Way will vote next month on $500,000 funding requests for the homeless shelter The Leon County Commission is discussing a similar request.

Leon and Escambia counties’ homeless statistics are similar, according to Council on Homelessness 2013 Report: Leon County: 1,072 homeless persons Escambia County: 830
