A native of Mississippi, James L. He served two previous terms on the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners as the representative for District 5, with his first term running from 1988 until 1992. He was re-elected as Commissioner for District 5 in 1996 and served until 2000. He also previously served on the board of the Escambia County Utilities Authority.

His father, Jerry, served as mayor of Rugby, North Dakota, and a state legislator while also working as a rancher, farmer and railroad worker. Jerry Gaetz died of a heart attack at the 1964 state Republican convention while his 16-year-old son watched on TV.
Don moved to Florida in 1978 and served as a hospital administrator in Jacksonville in the late 1970s.
In 2000, he was elected the Okaloosa County Superintendent of Schools. He was the first non-educator to be elected to the position, and oversaw the improvement of Okaloosa’s school system from a “C” average to an “A”.
He was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2006. He represents District 1: south Okaloosa County and all of Bay, Holmes, Jackson and Washington counties.
Eric Haines, Chief Deputy, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office
Haines has been employed at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office since April of 1999 and has worked in Patrol, Training and Accreditation as well as having served as Captain of Uniformed Services. Before his promotion this past summer, he served as Administrative Commander.
