Steven Barry
Escambia County Commissioner, District 5
Elected in 2012, Steven is a native of District 5 who attended McArthur Elementary, Ransom Middle School and Tate High School, where he played baseball for the Aggies. He continued to play baseball for the Argonauts while attending the University of West Florida, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Financial Accounting. During high school and college, Commissioner Barry worked at his family’s business, Smokey’s Bar-B-Que on Pensacola Boulevard.
Commissioner Barry is a Certified Financial Planner, who has operated an office in Cantonment for the past decade. He was a recipient of the University of West Florida’s “Outstanding Young Alumnus Award†in 2012.

Following in the footsteps of former executive director Susan Watson, Sara has organized the area’s first LBGT film festival, guided the passage of the Domestic Partnership Registry by the Pensacola City Council and is a founding member of the Escambia County Youth Justice Coalition. For coming to Pensacola, Sara lived in Thailand as the Executive Director of Cultural Canvas Thailand and Art Relief International.

Steve is a Florida-based political, communications and government relations strategist.
The St. Petersburg Times has called him “one of the savviest and most effective political strategists Florida Democrats have seen in ages.” In 2008, he was named one of Florida’s “100 Movers and Shakers†by Florida International Magazine, one of the most influential Democrats in Florida by Politics Magazine in 2009 and 2013, and the most influential Democratic strategist in Florida by the Tampa Bay Times in 2012.
In 2008, Steve directed the Obama/Biden campaign in Florida. In 2010, he served as an advisor Alex Sink’s campaign for Governor and the Florida Justice Association. In 2012, Steve returned to the President’s campaign as a Senior Advisor to the Florida re-election election.
Today he provides strategic advice to a number of clients, including Walt Disney World, AT&T and the Florida Hospital Association.
