Incorporate to get sidewalk

scream
The daily newspaper reports that Santa Rosa County is paying for a turn lane and sidewalk for Navarre High School. Cost $65,000. (Navarre student traffic gets break)

This is another example of the county performing a city function. Sidewalks should be provided by city government as they are in Pensacola, Milton and Gulf Breeze. Navarre wants its cake and wants to eat it, too. For those of you not from Mississippi, this means they want city services without having to pay additional city taxes.

There is no way county funds should be used for such a singular project. Is the sidewalk needed? Yes. Will it make it safer for kids walking to school? Yes. However, the county doesn’t need to get in the city service business.
