Interview with Ala. Charter Boat Capt.

I have been trying to find a fisherman who attended the Bayou La Batre town hall meeting. I found Capt. Thierry:

Capt. Mike Thierry, who owns Capt Mike’s Deep Sea Fishing, attended the meeting and walked away with a different impression of BP

“I think BP is trying to work with us,” says Thierry. “This all is sickening to me. I’ve spent more than a third of my life in Gulf and don’t know what to expect.

“We’ve had hurricanes, but nobody around here has ever lived through something like this. Hopefully we’re overreacting…I just don’t know what to think.”

Sunday afternoon, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced it is restricting fishing for a minimum of 10 days in federal waters most affected by the BP oil spill, largely between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi River to waters off Florida’s Pensacola Bay.

Thierry and other fisherman took a quick Haz-Mat course today on how to deal with the oil spill and possibly help with the clean-up.

“We still haven’t seen any oil here, but people are nervous and upset. This is our livelihood,” says Thierry.

Theirry said that he hasn’t been approached by BP about any possible settlement and he is uncertain what to do if one is offered.

“They’re trying to do the best they can,” Theirry says of BP. “They are only human. We just don’t how bad this will be or for how long.”
